The successive crises experienced by the traditional saltpeter industry, associated with the Shanks production technology established by JT Humberstone, led the Guggenheim family to seek a new way of dealing with saltpeter production in Chile. For this purpose, a group of engineers installed in the United States designed the processes and current saltpeter plants of María Elena and Pedro de Valdivia. Thanks to these improvements, in just a few years these offices would only be functioning in the north of Chile. This book tells us the evolution and improvement of the productive processes of these Offices, which have allowed them to survive until today producing fertilizers.
